This amazing 19th century antique wood chest trunk or strongbox with brass trim is marked on the bottom QMD for the Quartermaster Department and has a porcelain ceramic number fastened to the front which may either identify the specific Quartermaster it was issued to or the specific location. This may possibly date back as far as the Civil War with the dovetail corner construction and at one time it appears to of been painted. The latch or hasp at the front appears it may of been a replaced at one time but it is easily as old as the trunk and the ceramic number has a crack. This chest has a nice smaller size to it measuring about 22 1/2" x 17" x 11" in size. We wish we had the history on this chest and once would assume it could very well of held valuables, important documents as well as money to pay for the various supplies the Quartermaster was responsible for providing to the forts, camps or wherever he was assigned to work.
