This is a rare piece of boxing history of Seattle, Washington from the boxer turned promoter Lonnie Austin. This set of leather head gear has a cloth patch reading Lonnie Austin Head Guard with a patent date of 1924 showing Austin & Salt as agents and made by the Heater Glove Company. According to Wikipedia  Austin formed a partnership with Dan Salt in the early 1910's where Austin did the training while Salt did the promoting. Dode Bercot was the most famous fighter to develop from their relationship but the Salt/Austin partnership ended with the death of Salt in 1925.
The only other head gear i could find had what appear to be replaced straps where as this one has all of the straps as well as all of the bakelite or celluloid buttons still intact with Heater Seattle marked on them. It also didn't have the Austin & Salt agents marking meaning it came after the death of Salt so i would assume this to be an early head guard. It does show some light wear to the leather but it has great age patina and appeal. For anyone with an appreciation for boxing history and especially from the Seattle area where this head guard came from so this is a rare opportunity to acquire something you will be hard pressed to find again.
